Savvy Maritime Academy 1885 W State Rd 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315 Tel: 1-954-319-3594 Email: [email protected] Website: savvymaritimeacademy.com Facebook: @SavvyMaritimeAcademy Instagram: @savvymaritimeacademy | Newly launched in January 2022 (read "Dockwalk" article here), Savvy Maritime Academy is out to raise the standards of entry-level yacht crew training with their focus on practical, hands-on training that takes place in their 10,000-square-foot facility in Fort Lauderdale. The school's founder, Captain Brian Muston, has been in the yachting industry for 30 years, and the academy's staff of four have a combined total of 73 years of experience working on large yachts. While SMA does not yet offer the official STCW set of courses, the school does offer an extremely comprehensive, eight-week Deckhand Academy that covers a wide range of skills and know-how that will arm any starting deck crewmember with more training than even a full season onboard could give him or her: Everything from Polishing to Docking and from Painting to Tender Driving is covered in this in-depth curriculum. The first five sections of training cover subjects that include an Introduction to the Yachting World, Certificates and Contracts, Habitation, Social Understanding and Awareness, and Mental, Emotional, and Financial Preparedness. Current yacht crew may want to consider attending Savvy Maritime Academy's 10-day Tender Driving Course, which will provide much more practical instruction than the normal 2- to 3-day training (the basics) that is currently required for a license. In SMA's course, a full eight days are dedicated to practical sessions in their 31-foot center console, ensuring the crewmember will have the knowledge, ability, and peace of mind to drive in almost any sea conditions and situation. Savvy Maritime Academy's 10-day Interior Crew Training Course also goes well beyond the basics that are covered in most entry-level courses for interior crew. The packed curriculum covers (among other stew skills) housekeeping, guest service, bartending, flower arranging and bed making. Beyond that, interior-training enrollees gain exposure to deck skills that will come in very handy when joining a yacht, including hands-on training in basic knot tying, line and fender handling, and docking training. |
